Victorian Terrace #2 - Clay cladding finished - WIP5

Another quick post, just to show clay cladding finished now...

Not too bad for just inside two weeks work... next up brick pattern scoring/etching. Depending on weather, domestic duties and family fun, I may get this done over the weekend...

After that's done, its make the roof time...

In the meantime, one more London Thug to finish off and I have my Mob done too.

  1. I don't know how you can bear scoring all the bricks on. You must be must more patient than I am!

    1. Yep, its a bit laborious, but I think the final job will be worth it, and I only really have to do a few buildings for a 4' x 4' board...

  5. Personally I couldn't do all this clay cladding, I build them out of blue foam and carve the bricks right onto the foam. But you are pretty quick with your method.

    1. My experiments with foam materials available here in NZ have been less than perfect. Cant seem to get the same blue or pink foam here. Our stuff is green. I find the surface seems to snag somewhat when scoring these details in which leads to small tears in the surface of the materials.
Plus the MDF sheet is dirt cheap compared to the foam and I use surprisingly little clay for cladding these buildings, this one probably used about 1/8th of a 500g DAS pack.

    2. Actually main issue has been getting the green foam sheet in thin enough sheets to work with easily - 25mm thick is too much, yet seems the thinnest available. 1cm would be good but cant find any that thick. The Depron foam was OK-ish in thickness, but had the snagging issue I mentioned, and was too thin @ 5mm for structral work - I'd probably have to glue it to MDF sheet anyway, pretty much defeating the 'usefulness'...

    3. I use the foam for both surface detail and to build the structure about 1/2 " thick. I simply carve the outside. The tearing has to do with the speed of your cuts, slower cuts produce less tearing, or you can use a hot wire.

Coming along nicely again , I live in a Victorian town, so here are a few names to chose Balmoral Terrace, Union Street, Smith-Dorrien Crescent, Albert Road, Parliament Street, Victoria Road, Waterloo St, Clive Road. Alma Terrace. Jubilee Road. Coronation St, Dundas St, Ladysmith Ave...a few to think over...

  9. A master builder at work. You have done a top job so far Scott and I am sure doing it the way you have, the quality of the build and effort will show through with the finished model.
    Cheers,
    Pat.
